The article does a fantastic job of laying out this complex situation, including the implicit nuance in the historical path to the current juncture.
As stated, our community views this as a multi-generational issue given the age of this old, defunct infrastructure and the future of Lake Tahoe. Regardless of the amount of lead currently leaching out, these cables should be removed
A ton of focus has been placed on measuring and testing for potential contamination, and its certainly a concern given the known impacts of lead in drinking water. But that has never been the focus of our project. We hope the cables pose no threat to public health or the environment. I also view this through the prism of my professional experience in finance. Is it a risk worth taking into perpetuity when the stakes are a national treasure such as Lake Tahoe, and its “crown jewel” of Emerald Bay?
Through our petition many people have joined us in unequivocally stating “no”. From erosion to earthquakes, anchors and shifting rocks there are too many tail events that could negatively transform this situation. That doesn’t mean it will happen, but with each passing year the odds of a negative development increase on a multi-decade time horizon
Our efforts are not focused on pointing any fingers - they’re about coming together to take proactive, positive action. In researching this situation and going through the permitting process, we see the exceptional work that AT&T and its partners did to prove that removal was possible. We’re grateful for their efforts. We have said so time and time again. When these cables are eventually removed, they will be deserving of credit for establishing many key precedents and methodologies
We’re been inspired by the engagement of government agencies as we go through the permitting process. All 7 have been generous with their time and operated as true partners for the public. It's an honor to have California State Parks publicly support our efforts in the story
A huge thank you to Gregory Thomas for your coverage of this situation through the years, and the twists and turns along the way. Honored to be quoted and have our community effort presented. Our momentum continues to be driven by the wide range of stakeholders that love Lake Tahoe, and we will keep pushing until these lead cables are removed from the water
